Social Services Manager

LOCATION: Nipissing First Nation Head Office

Full Time Position with Benefits

 (after successfully completing 3 months of employment)

Salary Range: $73,897.10 to $83,750.04

Reporting to and receiving direction from the Director of Social Development and Koganaawsawin, the Social Services Manager will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Social Development Department. The Social Services Manager will provide leadership and administrative direction to Social Development Department/Koganaawsawin staff, and support the Director with the development and implementation of an Anishinabek Nation Social Development Department and Koganaawsawin strategic plan. The focus of the work of the Social Services Manager is rooted in child, youth, and family well-being.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Degree in Social Work or related discipline, or a combination of post-secondary education in a related sector with experience in a management position;
Minimum five years’ experience managing staff in a dynamic setting;
Demonstrate an understanding of First Nation community and social issues;
Knowledge of the 39 member First Nations socially focused programs, agencies and practices, will be considered an asset;
Working knowledge of government policies, programs, services and procedures at the Federal and Provincial level;
Ability to understand and speak Anishinaabemowin or willingness to learn is an asset;
Proficient with Microsoft Office suite; and
Valid Ontario driver’s license and be insurable.

Ability to apply good analytical, organizational and strategic skills across many situations; and
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develop annual workplans with staff, and monitoring the implementation of workplans and activities to ensure alignment with the vision and mission of the department;
Managing and overseeing Social Development/Koganaawsawin staff and attendance to ensure adherence to organizational policies and procedures;
Monitoring and evaluating the development of Koganaawsawin to ensure it is culturally-based and is reflective of First Nation’s needs;
Working with the Director and Social Finance Coordinator to manage budgets and ensure timely reporting of activities and deliverables;
Providing written reports to the Anishinabek Nation Child Well­-Being Working Group, and Anishinabek Nation leadership and community stakeholders on activities of Koganaawsawin and the Social Development Department;
Sourcing professional development opportunities for staff to maintain competencies;
Responsible for providing direction, mentoring and supervision of staff;
Support healthy collaboration between staff within a multi-disciplinary team;
Coordinating daily schedules and activities to support efficient operations;
Conducting annual evaluations for direct reports; and
Other duties as assigned.

Mikinakoos Children’s Fund launches $15,000 fundraiser for GivingTuesday

THUNDER BAY (November 22, 2023) — Mikinakoos Children’s Fund, an Indigenous children’s charity providing essentials to youth in remote First Nations in Northwestern Ontario, is announcing the launch of a special fundraiser in recognition of GivingTuesday.

In alignment with the global GivingTuesday movement, Mikinakoos Children’s Fund aims to raise $15,000 to provide vital winter clothing to 18 First Nations, collaborating with the KO First Nations, Keewaytinook Internet Highschools, and Fort Hope First Nation. The initiative seeks to purchase over 1,500 coats for children in these regions, ensuring they are equipped to brave the harsh winter months.

“The winter season can be particularly challenging in the remote areas we serve, where many children lack access to proper winter gear,” said Mikinakoos Executive Director Emily Shandruk. “Mikinakoos Children’s Fund believes that every child deserves the warmth of hope during the colder months. With this in mind, we’re launching this crucial campaign to make a positive impact.”

Recent support from TD Canada Trust’s Ready Commitment Funding, a $50,000 grant over two years, is boosting Mikinakoos Children’s Fund’s Warm Clothing initiatives, of which this initiative is a part. With growing requests from various communities and organizations, Mikinakoos’ GivingTuesday funding alone wouldn’t have sufficed. Thanks to the extra support, the charity can now ensure that no child is left without essential resources.

GivingTuesday, which falls on November 28, marks the opening day of the giving season—a global movement encouraging people to come together for a day of generosity and positive change. Mikinakoos invites individuals and organizations alike to join in the effort to make a difference.

Donate: Your contribution, regardless of size, will bring Mikinakoos Children’s Fund closer to its $15,000 goal. Every dollar counts. GivingTuesday falls on November 28; however, this fundraiser will run until December 31.

“The remoteness of the communities we serve presents challenges in shipping and distributing necessities, such as food, sporting equipment, and winter gear, especially with the absence of permanent roads,” said Shandruk. “Climate change has further exacerbated the inconsistency of ice road conditions, making the delivery of essential items even more difficult.”
