Social Services Administrative Assistant  

LOCATION: Nipissing First Nation Head Office

Duration: July 4 to August 25, 2023

Wage: $15.50 per hour – 37.50 hours per week

Under the supervision of the Social Services Director, the Social Services Administrative Assistant will be responsible to provide administrative and support services to the Social Services department.  In addition, the Social Services Administrative Assistant will develop and maintain good working relationships with other Anishinabek Nation (Union of Ontario Indians) program personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Enrolled in a post-secondary institution, preferably in a Business or Office Administration and/or program related to Social Services;
Registered as a full-time student during the preceding academic year and intends to return to school on a full-time basis in the next upcoming academic year;
First Nation and Inuit secondary and post-secondary students ages 15 to 30 inclusive;
Ordinarily a resident on reserve or in recognized communities or on community lands;
Legally entitled to work in Canada;
Knowledge of Aboriginal and Treaty rights, issues and related issues;
Knowledge and understanding of Anishinabek culture and the Anishinabek Nation (Union of Ontario Indians);
Good working knowledge of MS Office Suite; and
Valid driver’s license and insurable considered an asset.

Exceptional organizational, communication and multi-tasking skills;
Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment;
Excellent interpersonal, leadership and problem-solving skills; and
Exhibit professional attitudes and

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Preparing background reports and technical summaries relating to Social Services issues;
Reviewing and editing of materials to provide options, strategies and recommendations;
Assisting in the development of proposals, work plans and budgets for special Social Services initiatives;
Assisting in organizing various meetings, workshops and conferences as requested;
Participating in technical meetings as requested;
Working within the Social Services programs and respond to a variety of issues relating to Social Services;
Working with the Social Services Director and responding to First Nation community requests;
Performing a variety of administrative duties including note taking, archiving, distributing correspondence received, filing (if required), responding to incoming and outgoing phone calls, etc.; and
Other duties as assigned

Identify whether the applicant has been previously employed by the Anishinabek Nation (formerly Union of Ontario Indians). Note that the organization will conduct a reference check with the previous employee’s immediate supervisor;
Identify whether the applicant is a member of one of the 39 Anishinabek First Nations. Qualified applicants of Indigenous ancestry will be given preference in accordance with s. 16(1) of the Canadian Human Rights Act“; and

Mikinakoos Children’s Fund launches $15,000 fundraiser for GivingTuesday

THUNDER BAY (November 22, 2023) — Mikinakoos Children’s Fund, an Indigenous children’s charity providing essentials to youth in remote First Nations in Northwestern Ontario, is announcing the launch of a special fundraiser in recognition of GivingTuesday.

In alignment with the global GivingTuesday movement, Mikinakoos Children’s Fund aims to raise $15,000 to provide vital winter clothing to 18 First Nations, collaborating with the KO First Nations, Keewaytinook Internet Highschools, and Fort Hope First Nation. The initiative seeks to purchase over 1,500 coats for children in these regions, ensuring they are equipped to brave the harsh winter months.

“The winter season can be particularly challenging in the remote areas we serve, where many children lack access to proper winter gear,” said Mikinakoos Executive Director Emily Shandruk. “Mikinakoos Children’s Fund believes that every child deserves the warmth of hope during the colder months. With this in mind, we’re launching this crucial campaign to make a positive impact.”

Recent support from TD Canada Trust’s Ready Commitment Funding, a $50,000 grant over two years, is boosting Mikinakoos Children’s Fund’s Warm Clothing initiatives, of which this initiative is a part. With growing requests from various communities and organizations, Mikinakoos’ GivingTuesday funding alone wouldn’t have sufficed. Thanks to the extra support, the charity can now ensure that no child is left without essential resources.

GivingTuesday, which falls on November 28, marks the opening day of the giving season—a global movement encouraging people to come together for a day of generosity and positive change. Mikinakoos invites individuals and organizations alike to join in the effort to make a difference.

“The remoteness of the communities we serve presents challenges in shipping and distributing necessities, such as food, sporting equipment, and winter gear, especially with the absence of permanent roads,” said Shandruk. “Climate change has further exacerbated the inconsistency of ice road conditions, making the delivery of essential items even more difficult.”
