REGIONAL LANGUAGE LEAD – REC 1
Contract Opportunity (36 Months)
SUMMARY
The Regional Language Lead for Regional Education Council (REC) 1 reports to the Anishinabek Education Services Manager of the Kinoomaadziwin Education Body (KEB). The Anishinabek Education System (AES) is committed to incorporating the principles of Nishinaabemowin and culture across all programs and operations. The Regional Language Lead will lead and coordinate Nishinaabemowin revitalization initiatives with REC 1 and the REC Coordinator. The Regional Language Lead works closely with language keepers, Elders, knowledge keepers, and KEB staff to create a language program and database of resources that will serve the REC 1 Participating First Nations (PFNs). This position will build a plan to support and advance Nishinaabe language learners in PFN education teams, schools, and families. This role will coordinate and facilitate delivery of Nishinaabemowin programs and events to the PFNs of REC 1 using a regional dialect.
Duties and Responsibilities
Develop a Five-Year Language Strategy Plan for the PFNs of REC 1
Work with REC 1 PFN language keepers, Elders, knowledge keepers, revitalization committees, and partners
Develop partnerships with community stakeholders supporting language revitalization initiatives
Support the implementation of the KEB/Anishinabek Employment & Training Services (AETS) ‘ReconciliACTION’ partnership project
Support language networking opportunities for PFNs, schools, teachers, community members, and students through camps, classes, and events
Develop a database on language resources, training programs, teachers, and products available to the PFNs of REC 1
Provide ongoing feedback and guidance on improved language programming to increase student, teacher, school, and community involvement
Create and facilitate language learning circles for REC 1 and regional First Nations
Develop and update culturally relevant curriculum support materials for REC 1
Design and facilitate regional workshops and presentations on relevant Nishinaabemowin education topics at all levels (early learning, elementary, secondary, post-secondary, alternative) that are reflective of the needs and requests of the PFNs of REC 1
Provide the REC with regular updates, as requested
Other Duties
Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending education workshops; reviewing professional publications, establishing personal and REC networks, and participating in professional organizations/societies supporting language revitalization.
THE REQUIREMENTS
This contract requires an individual with the following knowledge, skills, and personal characteristics.
Essential Qualifications
Working knowledge of the Nishinaabemowin language and demonstrated commitment to achieving fluency
Post-secondary education in a field related to Native Studies or Education
Post-secondary education or prior experience in project management
Experience in delivering Nishinaabemowin programming
Knowledge of computer programs including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Teams, Outlook, and Nishinaabemowin platforms (ex. Anishinaabemodaa – Waking up Ojibwe)
Experience working within Indigenous organizations or communities
Ability to organize time, set priorities, and multi-task in order to meet various timelines
Knowledge of Anishinabek culture, history, and practices
Knowledge of provincial education standards
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong facilitation and presentation abilities
Demonstrated dependability, reliability, and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances
Ability to innovate and provide creative solutions
Must have strong rapport and reciprocal relationships with REC 1 fluent speakers, cultural knowledge keepers, and Elders will be considered an asset
Ability to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening
Ability to travel within REC 1, as requested
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum of five (5) years experience working with First Nation communities and/or organizations in education or a related field
Minimum of three (3) years experience in planning and executing high-quality events for First Nation communities and/or organizations
Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) certificate is an asset
Knowledge of Indigenous politics and advocacy in the Northern Superior Region
Fluency or approaching fluency in Nishinaabemowin

COMPENSATION
The annual salary range for this contract is $80,000 – $115 000, to commensurate with the experience, education, and traditional knowledge of the successful applicant.
HOURS OF WORK
The nature of this contract is such that some flexible work hours will be required on the evenings or weekends to meet programming needs. This is a 36-month contract.
LOCATION
This is a remote contract supporting the communities of Biigtigong Nishnaabeg, Netmizaaggamig Nishnaabeg, Biinjitiwaabik Zaaging Anishinaabek, and Long Lake #58 First Nation. Applicants must reside within the REC 1 area or be willing to relocate. Travel within REC 1 will be necessary, as requested.
