Reports To: Ontario Works Manager

The Food Bank Coordinator is responsible for overseeing daily operations and managing inventory for the Nipissing First Nation Food Bank. The coordinator ensures that all food and non-food items are sorted and distributed properly and collaborates to host food drives and fundraise for the food bank.

The Food Bank Coordinator also maintains accurate records of funds and may be responsible for creating and enforcing policies and procedures to ensure the food bank is run efficiently and effectively.

What you’ll do in the role

Coordinate and manage the daily operations of the food bank, managing inventory, and allowing community members to access food bank on access days as per policy.
Ensure NFN Food Bank Access forms are completed yearly and updated as
Maintain client caseload, ensuring access and statistics are inputted into a monthly distribution
Maintain a clean work environment in the Food Bank building area and
Ensures adherence to occupational health and safety Any findings should be reported to the supervisor and the health and safety committee.
Maintain inventory of supplies ensuring adequate level; replace when
Maintain food and non-food orders by placing orders on a weekly basis or as
Manage the budget and resources of the food bank to ensure its financial sustainability, including identifying new sources of funding and reducing waste.
Request purchase orders through Finance as needed for purchase of
Research and prepare statistics and policies and other reports as required by the OW Administrator – Canada Food Guide, Statistics Canada (Low Income Cut off Chart)
Stay up to date with food safety regulations, social welfare policies, and trends in hunger relief to ensure the organization is meeting best practices.
Follow work plan to ensure fundraising events are met, such as, Golf Tournament, Staff Food Challenge, Fall Village Marketplace Vendors Event, etc.
Submit monthly newsletter information to NFN Communications Officer, updating the community and promoting the Food Bank program.
Provide monthly calendar to clients to identify important dates and program
Update and revise the Food Bank Procedure Manual as

Mikinakoos Children’s Fund launches $15,000 fundraiser for GivingTuesday

THUNDER BAY (November 22, 2023) — Mikinakoos Children’s Fund, an Indigenous children’s charity providing essentials to youth in remote First Nations in Northwestern Ontario, is announcing the launch of a special fundraiser in recognition of GivingTuesday.

In alignment with the global GivingTuesday movement, Mikinakoos Children’s Fund aims to raise $15,000 to provide vital winter clothing to 18 First Nations, collaborating with the KO First Nations, Keewaytinook Internet Highschools, and Fort Hope First Nation. The initiative seeks to purchase over 1,500 coats for children in these regions, ensuring they are equipped to brave the harsh winter months.

“The winter season can be particularly challenging in the remote areas we serve, where many children lack access to proper winter gear,” said Mikinakoos Executive Director Emily Shandruk. “Mikinakoos Children’s Fund believes that every child deserves the warmth of hope during the colder months. With this in mind, we’re launching this crucial campaign to make a positive impact.”

Recent support from TD Canada Trust’s Ready Commitment Funding, a $50,000 grant over two years, is boosting Mikinakoos Children’s Fund’s Warm Clothing initiatives, of which this initiative is a part. With growing requests from various communities and organizations, Mikinakoos’ GivingTuesday funding alone wouldn’t have sufficed. Thanks to the extra support, the charity can now ensure that no child is left without essential resources.

GivingTuesday, which falls on November 28, marks the opening day of the giving season—a global movement encouraging people to come together for a day of generosity and positive change. Mikinakoos invites individuals and organizations alike to join in the effort to make a difference.
